Shear cutting: scratch-free, twist-free, up to 10 mm

Shear cutting is the fastest and most economical route to a straight sheet metal blank — entirely without any thermal effect on the material. On our CNC shears we cut sheets up to 8,200 × 2,100 mm and deliver the blanks stacked scratch-free to your production or straight on into ours.

Sheet metal cutting to perfection

August Bertrams GmbH produces shear-cut blanks up to 8,200 × 2,100 mm at sheet thicknesses up to 10 mm — in all structural steels, fine-grain structural steels and non-ferrous metals. Cutting is done on CNC shears whose small cutting angle delivers twist-free blanks with very low camber deviation.

Unlike thermal processes, the shear works without any heat input: no temper colours, no distortion at the cut edge, no altered microstructure. For straight contours, shear cutting is therefore not only the fastest but usually also the most economical route.

When shear cutting — and when laser?

Straight edges, rectangular blanks, high volumes: shear cutting. Contours, cut-outs, material thicknesses above 10 mm: laser cutting. Often the combination is the most economical — the blank from the shear, the contour from the laser. What distinguishes shear cutting from laser cutting?

The shear cuts mechanically, without heat input — fast and economical for straight edges. The laser cuts any contour and thicker sheets up to 20 mm. For many parts, combining the two processes is the most cost-effective route.

Can the blanks be processed further directly?

Yes. The scratch-free stacked, twist-free blanks go straight into press braking, welding or your own production without any straightening or dressing work.
